Collecting and Sharing Important Cottage Information for Family, Friends and Future Generations
Your Lake Association Executive is considering ideas to help our members collect, maintain and share important cottage information with friends and family, including future generations.
Stay tuned to this website and the upcoming Spring 2026 Edition of The Informer for more ideas.
In the meantime, we recently became aware of a new mobile application created in Canada called “Cottage Rules” that has been designed “to help you organize all the essential property information in one beautiful place”.
We haven’t tried out the ‘lite’ or free version yet, but when we do we’ll post updates about what we learned.

Selected Cottage Ownership Books:
The Cottage Ownership Guide: How to Buy, Sell, Rent, Share, Hand Down and Retire to Your Waterfront Getaway by Douglas Hunter (Cottage Life Books, 2009): Still the definitive cottage ownership book covering all aspects from finding a cottage to retirement planning, filled with checklists and tips for staying on top of cottage life, while minimizing surprises.
The Cottage Bible by Gerry Mackie and Laura Elise Taylor (Boston Mills Press, 2016): Focuses more on the practicalities and enjoyment of cottage life, offering guidance to both owners and visitors.
Saving the Family Cottage, Creative Ways to Preserve Your Cottage, Cabin, Camp, or Vacation Home for Future Generations (Nolo, 2025): A legal-focused guide on succession planning and helping families manage the transfer of ownership of the family cottage. Written by U.S. attorneys, but it still has application to cottage owners and their families in Canada.
